K. N. Toosi University of Technology (KNTU)

Faculty of Aerospace Engineering

The core of the faculty was formed as Aerospace group in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in the year 2000. It provided MSc programs in aerodynamics, propulsion, flight dynamics, and aerospace structures. In the year 2001, it launched the first MSc program in space machinery engineering in Iran. Later, in the year 2004, the BSc joint aerospace engineering program with MATI (Moscow State Aviation Technological University) was launched. Faculty have more than 14 members and 600 students.

In addition, there are short-term and long-term courses in the design of space machinery systems (satellites), multidisciplinary design optimization (MDO) for optimal systems and propulsion systems, analysis of instability in combustion and operators, computational fluid dynamics, flight simulation, design and analysis of guidance systems and flight controls, gyroscope mechanisms, systems of aerospace structures and operators. This department is also known as the Center of Excellence in Design and Simulation of Space Systems (DSSS).

Space Research Laboratory

Space Research Laboratory was established in 2006 in aerospace engineering faculty of Khaje Nasir-e-din Toosi University in the way of meeting the needs of our country in this field. Design and manufacturing of reaction wheels, cold gas thrusters, and magnetic field simulator are the main technological achievements of Space Research Laboratory beside other research, development, and educational programs in the field of space engineering.

Main goals of establishment of the Laboratory include the followings:

  1. Targeted scientific and research activity with an approach of meeting the current and future space needs of the country
  2. Improving the educational quality of students studying in the field of space engineering (Bachelor, Master, and PhD degree programs)
  3. Development and enhancement of space culture among different classes of community, especially the adolescent and youth

Space Systems Design Institute (SSDI)

In 2002, under the organizational structure on K. N. Toosi University of technology the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Laboratory (MDO lab) was established, where MDO and optimization methods became the core of its projects. In 2009 after seven years of consistent work, Ministry of Science, Technology and Research promoted MDO lab as Space Systems Design Institute, SSDI. By moving to a bigger place, SSDI began its professional work on various aerial and space topics. SSDI composed of 3 main departments:

  1. Navigation, Guidance, and Control
  2. Optimization and MDO
  3. System Engineering

Design and development of national Nasir I Star Tracker was accomplished during the first years of SSDI setup. Several software development projects, including guidance, control, navigation and system engineering were also defined and completed. Another achievement was development of Satellite control module with cold gas thrusters in hardware in the loop phase.
